Regenerative burners are designed to recover and reuse the exhaust heat from the high-temperature combustion chamber and to heat the combustion air.

Regenerative burners work with mutual and controlled working principle of two heat cell structures with the same feature.

Each burner contains a honeycomb ceramic plate or a case of balls. The designs of these regenerators may differ from burner to burner. In these systems, while the first burner works in the combustion mode with cold combustion air, the other burner absorbs the exhaust gases in the combustion chamber. Heating of the combustion air is provided by storing the heat in honeycomb ceramic plates or balls.

The system works by directing the exhaust gases from the furnace into an environment filled with refractory material, such as alumina balls or honeycomb ceramic plates. Alumina balls and honeycomb ceramic plates are economical materials with excellent corrosion resistance and heat resistance. The high-temperature exhaust gas heats the alumina ball or honeycomb ceramic mediums at high temperature, so the high-temperature waste heat energy coming from the exhaust is recovered and stored. When the environment is fully heated, the direction of the exhaust gas is reversed, the stored heat is transferred to the inlet combustion air entering the burner, so the preheated combustion air in the regenerative environment (approximately 750-1100 oC) starts to ignite the burner and the flame is sprayed into the furnace at high speed. The exhaust from the hot (regenerative) environment then heats the cold environment and the process continues.

Because of this technique, the regenerative burner avoids the waste of fuel used to heat the combustion air, thus increasing the combustion efficiency.
